INTRODUCING A STUNNING SOUTH AFRICA SELF-DRIVE ADVENTURE - A MUCH COOLER, CROWD-FREE ALTERNATIVE TO THE CLASSIC GARDEN ROUTE...

Cape Town thrills with its best-in-the-world beaches, restaurants and landscape, its frisky up-and-coming neighbourhoods and a thriving art scene. After a couple of days here, head up the coast for a change of pace to the fishing village of Paternoster.

This is one of the oldest fishing villages on the West coast of South Africa. With its pretty white-washed cottages and primary-coloured wooden boats, it's hugely popular with Capetonians escaping for a long weekend of fresh fish and sea breezes. Then loop back round through the Cape Winelands to the lush green Riebeek Valley where you'll find olive groves, vineyards and the famed gin and tonic happy hour at the Royal Hotel.

The final stop is charming Robertson in the heart of the Wine Route for a fresh departure from the Franschhoek throngs.

Accommodation

KENSINGTON PLACE

4
Cape Town, South Africa

One of the best places to stay in South Africa's most exciting city

Each of the eight rooms has been elegantly decorated using an eclectic mix of African and European styles. This modern sensibility is continued throughout the rooms' exquisite marble bathrooms, terraces and sitting areas. Services offered include breakfast, 24-hour room service, private dining and a pretty garden with a swimming pool.

STRANDLOPER OCEAN BOUTIQUE HOTEL

4
Paternoster, South Africa

A beautiful property with front-row sea views

This charmingly run hotel is set on the edge of Paternoster, with some rooms opening directly onto the dunes. The breaking surf and fresh sea foam is just a hundred metres away.
Expect great breakfasts and restrained modern design with the odd indigenous touch.

'Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel is by far the smartest place to stay here, a charming and contemporary slice of civility poking up between the sand dunes, waving its near-faultless credentials discreetly but confidently.'

ROYAL HOTEL

4
Riebeek-Kasteel, South Africa

The ultimate base from which to explore the Winelands

The grand old hotel is located right in the centre of Riebeek Kasteel village, from which the wine centres of Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Tulbagh and Ceres are all within easy reach.

The charming old-world style of the interiors - plantation shutters, dark wood four posters, rattan chairs under whirring ceiling fans - is offset by great views of the valley from the garden, where you'll find a swimming pool and massages available in the outdoor gazebo.

ROBERTSON SMALL HOTEL

4
Robertson, South Africa

A fabulous blend of contemporary design and classic Victorian heritage

The smartest stop off in Robertson. The bedrooms are spread out across a gracious and spacious Victorian manor house (a pavilion-like building with elegant wrought-iron verandahs), under the eaves in the stable block and around a large lap pool.

There's an excellent restaurant, a pretty blue-and-white-tiled bar plus a wellness room.
